Celebration of Life
On November 19, 1933, Willie J.C. Johnson was born to the late Leroy and Ruth Johnson. He was blessed with 3 brothers. Calvin, Clint, and Roy Johnson. He received his elementary education at Wilson North Vista, and some High Schooling at Wilson High, both located in Florence S.C. After the passing of his mother, Teenage Willie was taken in by his Aunts Irene and Evelyn. In 1947 he moved to New York City where he would go on to graduate from Chelsa Vocational High School. He continued his education, and he would go on to receive 3 Diplomas: C.I.T. Technical Institute, Government Training for Civil Service, and the United States Strategic Air Force School of Culinary.
Willie served for his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 until being Honorable discharged in 1956. He would often share stories on how he was the only Africain American Man respected in the kitchen for making “great home-based meals” Shortly after being discharged, he moved to Philadelphia Pa where he met the love of his life Elizabeth Allen, At a party with mutual friends “She was the only one I saw in a red dress, plus she promised me a home cooked dinner”. These two were married on December 14, 1958, and from this union they had 3 children, Anita, Jennifer, and Willie Jr. They were married for 53 years until she was called home in 2011.
Willie provided for his family by working with the City of Philadelphia for 27 years. He began with the city as a Plant Operator, and throughout this duration he ultimately retired as an Assistant Crew Chief. He loved to travel with his family. They would often pack up the Cadillac and drive down to one of his favorite places, Atlantic City, Nj. He continued this tradition with his grandchildren until his health began to change. A true to life Family Man.
He had so many hidden talents, one being a master bowler of 10 years. He joined a Bowling league with Erie Lanes, winning lots of tournaments, even being a 1st place winner in the P.G.H Championship. Willie loved cooking. An authentic chef at heart. He knew his way around ANY kitchen, a mixologist with spices and guru on the sauces. Chef Johnson made the best mac and cheese; BBQ chicken, Fried fish and Banana Bread are just some of his greats. Only a few knew him as “Suga Foot” and he had a great sense of style. Those who knew him would tell you he stayed sharp! Matching every suit with a hat down to the socks, even the shoes. An infectious smile that will light up any room and a captivating spirit that makes everyone pay attention. “Suga-Foot” had class.
Being a devoted Christian Willie and his wife Elizabeth joined Thankful Baptist Church in 1958 under the late Reverend Harrison J. Trapp. It was there he served on the Usher board, the Male Choir, the Pastors aide Committee, A Sliver Club Member and cooked for every event the church had. Receiving numerous awards for Achievements and Appreciation for going above and beyond with Thankful Baptist Church, He took the position to become a Trustee which he held until his health begin to fail him.
In 1977, Willie started his fraternal afflictions when he was accepted into Laurel lodge #2. A brotherhood that would carry him throughout his life. For a sustained time, he received #1 A.A.S.R., Master Masion of the Year and the Holy Royal Arch Masons Award. Staying active with his lodge members, he would go on to serve on the banquet committee, Fish Frys, and other events for the community.
A beloved servant of God, a soldier at heart. Humbling himself to the master, Willie was called home to be with the lord on November 12, 2025. Living for 91 years he finally found eternal rest and was reunited with God and his beloved wife. His spirit however leaves a profound legacy of kindness, strength and devotion that will inspire all who knew him.
Willie J.C. Johnson is survived by his Children, Anita, Jennifer, and Willie Jr. Three loving Grandchildren Timothy Jr, Trina, and Casey, and Eight cherished great Grandchildren: Tatiyana, Tamia, Timothy 3rd, Maleeha, Nyrie, Bryson, Journee and Kadien. He also leaves behind his 2 brothers Client & Julia Johnson, Alder (Roy) & Ann Johnson. Sister-in-law Wilhelmenia Johnson (late Calvins Wife) as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends who will miss his Encouraging and Uplifting nature.

I thank God how you always showed up,
Not just for me but for Everybody.
I thank God for the family you created.
Thank God for the values you instilled.
I thank God I got to call you Grandpop.

Thank God he took away your pain
I thank God because I know you gained your wings.
You will forever be missed, endlessly forever in my heart
So Im thanking God for everything from the start.
