THE HEART OF OUR FAMILY

Mamie Elizabeth Smith was the oldest of three children, born on December 7, 1933, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the late Reverend Thomas Jefferson and Juanita F. Smith.

On October 8, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones, God called Mamie home to walk the golden pathway to Heaven, where she received her heavenly wings, earned through a lifetime of love, faith, and devotion.

Mamie was raised in a Christian home, and accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age. She often attended Gethsemane Fire Baptized Holiness Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In the late 1930’s, the family relocated to Orlando, Florida where she started her childhood education. In 1945, the family relocated and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she completed her education in the Philadelphia School System.  After completing her education, Mamie began working at R. L. Polk & Co., where she served as a clerical supervisor for many years until her son’s injury. She later held various positions as a culinarian and caregiver.

Beyond her work outside the home, Mamie was the heart of her family. At a young age she learned how to cook and was continually praised for her skill in the kitchen.  She enjoyed beautifying her home, cooking, gardening, and watching basketball. Even in old age, she fervently kept her eyes on a basketball game and could tell you who was playing without a second glance. Outside the home, one of her favorite outings was going to the casino to play the slot machines.

Mamie always made time to sit and listen to others. She enjoyed talking with the younger members of the family and especially cherished the company of her grandchildren. Her loving presence, listening ear, and the memories she created with her family will forever remain in their hearts.

During the timeframe from 2020 to 2023, Mamie received hospice care from Penn Medicine and Temple where she was provided with comfort at home, and compassionate support until God called her home. Her family is grateful for the care and kindness extended to her during this time.

Mamie’s life was a testament to the love she shared, the family she cherished, and the memories she leaves behind. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

The following children preceded her in death; Lynn, Townsend (Carlton), Elveria (Peanut),

Keith, Jeffery (Weasel), and Carmen, and her brothers, Thomas Jr., Samuel, Ervin, and James.

Mamie is lovingly remembered by three of her daughters, Chermaine, Karen, Stephanie, ten grandchildren, twenty-nine great grandchildren, seventeen great-great grandchildren. One sister, Lottie Muse and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends also left to keep her memories.

Mamie also raised her two nieces Joy Caldwell and Clarisa Hinton and newphew, Dwayne Smith.

Mamie will truly be missed. Her legacy will continue on through the generations to come.
