Luther Burkett Evans, affectionately known as “Pap,” was born on January 23, 1942, in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, to the late John Evans and Rose Saunders. Pap was raised alongside his family in Elm City, North Carolina. He was educated in Wilson County Schools and later completed his GED at the Community College of Philadelphia.

Early in his career, Pap worked as a mechanic, developing the knowledge and skills that would remain a lifelong passion. He later worked for the City of Philadelphia as a tree trimmer. During the latter part of his career, Luther worked for Ford Motor Company in Philadelphia, where he eventually retired. Throughout his career, he earned numerous certifications and served in several roles, including supervising and training fellow employees.

On February 20, 1962, Luther married the love of his life, Mary Louise Evans, in Edgecombe County. They shared more than 63 years of marriage and built a life and family together in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Luther “Pap” Evans was known for his gift of storytelling, his deep knowledge of cars and mechanics, and his ability to make people feel welcome. In his younger years, he also coached baseball. Pap was a respected and beloved staple of his community, serving as a father and grandfather figure to many. He was always willing to offer advice, encouragement, support, and, when needed, a helping hand; or a set of tools.

For many years, Pap served as block captain in his Rising Sun Avenue community, where he helped organize neighborhood cleanups, celebrations, and other community activities. His commitment to his neighbors reflected the care, generosity, and sense of responsibility that defined his life.

Luther “Pap” Evans was preceded in death by three of his sons, Ricky Evans, Gregory Evans, and Gilbert Evans, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and, more recently, by his sisters, Mary Catherine Davis (Paul) of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and Annie Doris Batts of Elm City, North Carolina.

He leaves to cherish his love, legacy, and memories his devoted wife, Mary Louise Evans, of the home; two sons, Craig Evans (Melissa Wilson) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Albert Farmer (Barbara) of Elm City, North Carolina; one sister, Louise Jean Smith (Wilbert Thomas) of Portsmouth, Virginia; thirteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members, neighbors, and long time buddies: John Sweat, Steve Robinson and Cyrus Cupt.

Pap will be remembered for his stories, his wisdom, his skilled hands, his love for family, and the many ways he showed up for those around him. His presence left an imprint on his family and community that will continue to be felt for generations.
