THE LIFE STORY
James Phoenix, a father, brother, uncle, cousin, veteran, scholar, and passionate athlete, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025, at the age of 74. James was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, on May 8, 1951. James was the beloved son of Jay and Nannie Phoenix, who proceeded him in death.
A proud graduate of Simon Gratz High School in 1969, James answered the call to serve our country and drafted into the United States Army in 1971. He served honorably until 1973, later continuing his military service in the U.S. Air Force from 1979 to 1980. He served in the United States National Guard for over two decades and retired as a sergeant.Driven by a deep desire to help others, James pursued higher education and earned hisbachelor’s degree in psychology from Cheyney University. He dedicated some of his professional life to serving as a social services case manager and advocating for those in need with compassion and integrity.
Outside of his career, James was known for his unwavering love of boxing. What began as a personal passion evolved into a professional pursuit, and he proudly stepped into the ring as a professional boxer. James was known for his intense workouts and jogging at Cherashore Playground. He also trained people in boxing at the Happy Hollow Playground and Recreation Center, showcasing his discipline, strength, and determination. Throughout his many accomplishments, his greatest pride was undoubtedly his daughter, Brandi Spencer-Phoenix (also known as his Pon Pon), born in October 1991, who has played a pivotal role in his life. His legacy lives on through her and the many lives he touched throughout his journey.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, Brandi Spencer-Phoenix, whom he shared with Audrey Spencer. James was one of seven siblings, having two brothers and four sisters. He was preceded in death by his sister Janet Hudson and brother Joseph Phoenix.James leaves behind a loving family, including his brother Jerome Phoenix, sisters Darlene Phoenix, Dorothy Thompson, and Judy Phoenix, and his brother-in-law, Kieth Thompson. He is also remembered fondly by a host of nieces and nephews, each of whom he gave a special nickname a testament to his warmth and playful spirit.
James will be remembered as a man of resilience, heart, and purpose a true fighter in every sense of the word.
