Anthony “Tony” “T-Bird "Anthony Baron Thrones, affectionately known as “Tony” or “T-Bird,” was born in 1954 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late Zora Lee Thrones and James Speakes. He was the middle child of three siblings, with his older brother, Ernest, lovingly known as “Pee Wee,” and his sister, Lynette, affectionately called “Cookie.”
Tony received his education in Philadelphia and attended Benjamin Franklin High School, graduating in 1973. Following graduation, he pursued employment with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and in county construction. However, Tony’s love for automobiles eventually became his true passion. His appreciation for cars grew into something much more than an interest; it became a defining part of his life. A Love That Lasted a Lifetime In 1973, shortly after graduating from high school, Tony met the love of his life, Barbara Smith. What began as a young love blossomed into a beautiful relationship spanning 53 years. Together, they built a life filled with love, shared experiences, and precious memories that will forever remain a part of their family’s story. From their union came two sons, the late Laton and Shannon. Tony’s love for his family was an important part of his life, and the legacy he leaves behind will continue through the generations who carry his name, his stories, and his memories. A Personality All His Own Tony was truly one of a kind! He was such a character that everyone who knew him was fortunate enough to have their own version of Tony. No two people may have described him exactly the same way, because he had a unique way of connecting with people and leaving his own special impression. Whether through his personality, his words, or the memories he created, Tony gave those around him something to remember. He was a man whose presence could not be duplicated, and those who knew him will forever have their own stories to tell about the one and only T-Bird. The Love of G-Pop and Pop Pop. One of Tony’s greatest joys was his grandchildren. Affectionately known as “G-Pop” and “Pop Pop,” he loved his grandchildren unconditionally. They held a special place in his heart, and the love he shared with them became a treasured part of his legacy. The bond between Tony and his grandchildren was one to be cherished. His love, the memories they created together, and the special name they called him will remain with them throughout their lives. Although they will miss his presence, they can forever hold close the love of their beloved G-Pop and Pop Pop. Those He Leaves to Cherish His Memory:
Tony leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 53 years, Barbara; his son Shannon and daughter-in-law, Janeen; his son Tony; his daughter Nicole; and his 10 beloved grandchildren. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure the memories they shared with him.
Tony was preceded in death by his loving parents, Zora Lee Thrones and James Speakes, and his beloved son, Laton. A Lasting Legacy of Love Though Tony’s earthly journey has come to an end, the memories he created and the love he shared will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His life was woven into the stories of his family and friends, and each person will carry a unique memory of the man they knew as Tony, T-Bird, G-Pop, or Pop Pop. His family will remember his unmistakable personality, his passion for automobiles, and the unconditional love he had for his grandchildren. His legacy will continue through the generations, reminding them that a life is not measured only by the years lived, but also by the love shared and the lives touched along the way.
